Caring for your Metal Roof

Upkeep for a Metal Roof is simple, and maintaining it will give your roof a longer lifespan. Most of the time, inspecting and making sure metal shingles or tiles aren’t damaged by snow, ice or hail will make a big difference. We recommend at least two detailed inspections a year and a general look over after major storms. With little maintenance, your metal roof can last 50 years or longer. Here are some suggestions to giving your roof a longer and healthier period.

A clean roof is a trouble free roof.

Tall trees can shed dirt, pollen, leaves, and other debris that can alter your roof’s functionality and look. It’s important to keep your gutters free of any of the mentioned above to prevent water from backing up under the roof line. Also keep the rest of the roof as clean as possible so that leaves or debris that can retain water.

Be careful – Make sure to take proper safety precautions because metal roofs may be slippery. When in doubt call a professional.

Low to no foot traffic

Although roof professionals walk on your roof while installing it, they’re familiar with manufacturer’s recommendations about where to step. A constant stream of foot traffic on your roof can leave marks which can lead to leaks in certain areas or simply damage the appearance. Only walk on your roof if completely necessary.

Loose screws

Tighten any loose screws or replace screws that have been dislodged. Your replacements should be the same material as the rest of the installation and manufacturer specification. When you are installing new screws, do so only in raised areas. Putting screws in lower areas can cause water to puddle, which may produce rust and leaks.

Occasional maintenance of your metal roof will save you money in the long run and enable your roof to last for more than a lifetime.
